If you use a retail “perpetual” edition of Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (e.g., MS Office 2016 / 2019 / 2021 / 2024 C2R) just keep in mind that Susan Bradely’s 7000001 Changing Microsoft 365 click to run to slower patching channel states the commands in that tutorial for changing to the Semi-Annual Channel “is not for Office Home and Student or any of the perpetual versions. It’s only for the Microsoft 365 subscription versions.”

OK so I have installed the “retail” (“prepetual” C2R I guess) version of Office 2024 which includes Outlook classic) and have automatic updates turned OFF.
So if I manually update every 6 months, is that the same as being on the slow C2R 365 patching channel? As I thought the automatic updates followed the regular C2R updates except there were no product enhancements/updates and that the updates are cumulative.

Hi Tex265:
A “perpetual” edition of Microsoft Office just means you make a one-time purchase for a product license that allows you to use your MS Office product until the end of support date (typically 5 years of mainstream support after release) instead of paying an ongoing monthly or annual subscription fee.
So if I manually update every 6 months, is that the same as being on the slow C2R 365 patching channel?
No, it’s not the same.
See the comparison chart at Comparison of the Update Channels for Microsoft 365 Apps. The “regular” Current Channel (this includes Microsoft 365 and “perpetual” editions of MS Office C2R) receives feature updates as soon as they’re ready (i.e., on no fixed schedule) and security updates (if needed) once a month on the second Tuesday of the month. In comparison, the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel receives feature updates twice a year in January and July, and security updates (if needed) once a month on the second Tuesday of the month.
This means if you are on the “regular” Current Channel (or any other release channel, for that matter) and simply turn off automatic updates for six months you will miss your monthly security patches and leave your system vulnerable to exploit.

I don’t seem to be running “Click-to-run” Office.
“Microsoft® Outlook® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2504 Build 16.0.18730.20186) 64-bit”
There’s semi annual enterprise (preview) and semi annual enterprise plain.
Yes it’s confusing……

When you go to “Office Account” next to the “About Outlook” button you’ll see something like:
It does say “Learn more”, but it doesn’t say that’s what I’m running.
***edit*** Okay, I got it sorted. I disabled “Click-to-run” in Services, and none of the Office apps would open; enabled it again, and everything’s fine.
